HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 28, 2012 – A group of High Point University students are attending the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. to experience a national convention for the first time and interview political leaders about top issues in the 2012 election.
Students traveled to the convention as part of the HPU Democracy USA Project, an experiential learning initiative that uses the presidential election as a platform and puts civic engagement at the forefront of academics. Students will also travel to Charlotte to attend the Democratic National Convention next week.
Today, they met Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles; former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain; and the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, identified by the Wall Street Journal as one of America’s seven most influential Hispanic Leaders. They are recording interviews with political leaders to include in a reality show called “The American Dream Project.” HPU students have been shooting segments of the show for the past nine months.
Students return to HPU from the convention on Friday.
