HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 18, 2015 – Dr. Kristin Ackerman joined High Point University as an assistant professor of biology.
Ackerman teaches sections of Human Physiology and Animal Physiology in both the laboratory and the classroom. She also leads undergraduate research while studying neural development, neuronal regeneration and the disruption of nicotine on early organismal development.
“My courses allow students to explore disciplines within the health sciences and challenge them to think like medical professionals through classroom-directed problem solving and case studies. This helps students integrate what they are learning in the classroom into their professional lives,” says Ackerman. “I also have the opportunity to foster transformational growth by mentoring students in the lab, where they will have a hand in conducting meaningful scientific research.”
Ackerman comes to HPU from the University of Notre Dame, where she taught courses as a research assistant professor at the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and as an instructor in the Department of Preprofessional Studies. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Ohio Northern University and her doctorate in integrated biomedical sciences from the Ohio State University.
“I am the product of a liberal arts education, so I am thrilled to return to a university environment that embraces these ideals,” says Ackerman. “Often the sciences are deemed to only be technical disciplines, but transferable skills such as strong writing, speaking and critical thinking are vital to a scientist’s success.”
