Planning and Applying for Internship Credits
STUDENTS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO COMPLETE AN INTERNSHIP FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT UNTIL THEY HAVE EARNED 60 CREDIT HOURS. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR INDIVIDUAL DEPARTMENT TO DETERMINE IF YOUR MAJOR HAS ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS RELATED TO INTERNSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT. If you are seeking academic credit and do not yet have 60 credit hours, please refer to our Externship program.
When thinking about completing an internship for academic credit, you will need to plan ahead. Most students intern during the summer before their senior year or during the first or second semester of their senior year.
Follow the steps below to apply for internship credits:
Step 1. Application Checklist
Refer to the Application Checklist to verify you meet all qualifications and to ensure that the application is filled out properly.
Step 2. The Internship Application is now available as a Word document. Please type your application and obtain the appropriate hand-written signatures. The Director of Career & Internship Services is the last signature that you will need to obtain before completing the application process.
*STUDENTS COMPLETING SUMMER INTERNSHIPS MUST PAY FOR EACH CREDIT THAT THEY PLAN TO RECEIVE.*
During the Internship
Interns are evaluated by both their site and faculty supervisors on progress towards their learning objectives. Evaluation generally falls into the follow categories: performance as a member of the staff, performance on assigned tasks, professionalism and ethical behavior, ability to work with others, and potential for work in this field.
Faculty supervisors are at a disadvantage in that they have not been on-site during the entire internship; therefore, they must rely heavily on site supervisor evaluations. However, determining final grades is solely the responsibility of the faculty supervisor. A final grade of Pass or Fail will be given for all internships.
All paperwork should be submitted online.
Weekly Time Log
Each week, student interns must complete an online Weekly Time Log. A copy of this log will go to both your faculty and your site supervisor.
Midterm Evaluation Form
Student interns and their site supervisors must complete the online Midterm Evaluation Form at the halfway point of the internship experience. For Fall and Spring interns, submit the online form just before break week. For Summer interns, submit the online form at the end of June.
Final Evaluation Form
Student interns and their site supervisors must complete the online Final Evaluation Form near the end of the internship experience. Submit the evaluation with your final weekly time log.
