{"id":692,"date":"2012-05-15T16:58:55","date_gmt":"2012-05-15T20:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/engineering\/?p=692"},"modified":"2021-03-15T17:00:31","modified_gmt":"2021-03-15T21:00:31","slug":"roger-shore-receives-slane-distinguished-teaching-service-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/engineering\/2012\/05\/15\/roger-shore-receives-slane-distinguished-teaching-service-award\/","title":{"rendered":"ROGER SHORE RECEIVES SLANE DISTINGUISHED TEACHING-SERVICE AWARD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HIGH POINT, N.C., May 15, 2012 \u2013 Roger Shore, associate professor of mathematics and computer science at High Point University, received the Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching-Service Award at HPU\u2019s 88th Commencement Ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe award was completely unexpected,\u201d says Shore. \u201cI was humbled and honored by it. It\u2019s nice to know that my life and work have made a positive impact on those around me at High Point University. That has been my life\u2019s goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shore came to the university in 1988 with bachelor\u2019s degrees in mathematics and biology from Elon University, a master\u2019s degree in mathematics from Appalachian State University and a master\u2019s degree in computer science from Clemson University.<\/p>\n<p>He developed the computer science minor program into a major in the early 1990s, and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has flourished since that time. Recently, Shore has worked with his students to complete two successful apps for iPads and iPhones, one available on the iTunes store and one available for classroom use. The \u201cHail to the Chief\u201d app is a digital version of a presidential memorization board game, created by two High Point natives, that\u2019s available for download to the general public. He and three computer science students also helped economics professors in the Phillips School of Business develop an app that simulates market trading on a live trading floor in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, he works with computer science students to present their research at prestigious conferences, and he mentors them in preparation for the international ACM programming contest that\u2019s held each fall.
