In the past few\u00a0years, our majors have interned at Asimov\u2019s Science Fiction<\/em> magazine, Cond\u00e9 Nast publishing, Pace Communications, the Cultural Department of Charleston, Our State<\/em> magazine, The Broadway Channel and the Courier Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n English majors can gain valuable publishing experience by editing and producing Apogee<\/em>, the English department\u2019s literary magazine. Apogee<\/em> publishes fiction, poetry, personal essays and art from emergent and established writers and artists.<\/p>\n English department students learn to navigate and create in the digital world, from digital storytelling to the use of social curation for research, from blogging about travel experiences to developing online portfolios.<\/p>\n Our service-learning courses emphasize ethical practice and hands-on experience working with partner organizations. In our new Community Writing Center, faculty and students implement programs serving local children and adults.<\/p>\n The HPU English Department hosts a year-long Phoenix Reading Series, which includes an annual fall literary festival. Visiting writers offer public readings and work directly with students on developing their craft. Past keynote festival readers include Chang-Rae Lee, John Barth, Robert Creeley, Quinn Dalton, James Dickey, Winston Groom, W.P. Kinsella, and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Jorie Graham. Readers during the year-long series, such as our 2013 guests Bruce Machart, author of The Wake of Forgiveness, and Matthew Batt, author of Sugarhouse<\/em>, visit classrooms and have lunch with students.<\/p>\nPublication<\/h4>\n
