Dr. Will Suchan teaches courses in Web Development, Programming, Database Systems, and Software Engineering. His expertise is in information assurance, and he has published numerous papers on digital privacy, security and IT education. Dr. Suchan joined the HPU Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2017. The next year Computer Science split away from Math to become the first department in the newly created Webb School of Engineering, and in 2019 Dr. Suchan was selected as the Founding Chair of the Department of Computer Science. “I was inspired to study information security years ago when my family’s electronic medical records were stolen,” he says. “In today’s world, rarely a day goes by without hearing about electronic crime, ransomware, threats to the power grid, denial-of-service attacks, and on and on and on. I look forward to preparing students to become professionals who can develop strategic solutions to these problems.” Dr. Suchan joined the Computer Science faculty after working for four years as the first Department Administrator for HPU’s Department of Physician Assistant Studies. Previous to that he taught at West Point for 13 years as part of a 30-year career in the Army. While there he held the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, and Academy Professor, and served in various roles such as Course Director, Program Director, and Deputy Department Head. In the Army Suchan served in multiple locations worldwide with jobs in communications, personnel, operations, logistics, and command, and he was awarded numerous military awards to include the Legion of Merit. He has a Bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy, as well as a Master’s degree and PhD in Computer Science from Arizona State University.
