HPU Honors Visits the TEDx Greensboro Event

A contingent of Honors Scholar students at HPU attended the 2018 TEDx Greensboro event on March 22, 2018. This event was filled with many innovative and creative speakers. The theme of “Wonder” celebrated our curiosity to explore what’s possible and the wonderment found in the unexpected. “Wonder” embodies the present perfectly. In “Wonder,” lies uncertainty that carries with it feelings of surprise, curiosity and sometimes, doubt. Also in “Wonder,” there is a sense of marvel and amazement as we explore what’s possible. We live in a time where almost any idea can come to life.

2018 Big South Quiz Bowl Tournament

The Honors Scholar Program at HPU hosted the 2018 Big South Quiz Bowl Tournament. HPU’s team of seven students competed against teams from Gardner-Webb University, Liberty University, Presbyterian College and Radford University. Nathan Grinalds, a sophomore chemistry major, was recognized as HPU’s highest individual scorer. Several HPU faculty, staff and students served as volunteer moderators, scorekeepers and guides, including tournament co-directors Dr. Bill Carpenter, director of the Honors Scholar Program, and Bradley Taylor, student success coach. “The notable value of Quiz Bowl and this tournament is being able to see the connection of knowledge gained from the classroom to engaging with peers in fun competition,” says Taylor, who coached HPU’s team.

2017 Southern Regional Honors Conference

HPU Honors Scholars visited Asheville, NC, March 30th – April 1st, where Riccardo De Cataldo, Brittany Gentilhomme, and Hannah Grau presented at the 2017 Southern Regional Honors Council Conference.  The annual conference provides opportunities for undergraduates in honors programs and colleges to present their scholarly research. Riccardo (pictured below at left) presented on his use of a 3D printer to build models of electron waves (orbitals), which can aid in student understanding of these models. Brittany (below at center) spoke about her exploration of the honors experience in public education and college, which arose from a project she completed in strategic communication, creative writing, and literature. Hannah (below at right) exhibited her use of plaster, laser cutting, and 3D printing to translate the human bust into an art form. All three students gave fantastic presentations!
