High Point Law\u2019s Jurist-In-Residence, Bob Edmunds, was named \u201cAttorney of the Month\u201d in the January edition of Attorney At Law Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Justice Edmunds, a former Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court, currently teaches at High Point Law. He also serves as President of the Appellate Judges Education Institute (AJEI) at the National Judicial College, which provides continuing judicial education to US appellate judges and justices.<\/p>\n

In the article<\/a> entitled \u201cTeach Your 1Ls Well,\u201d Justice Edmunds provides his wisdom on effective legal analysis, the Golden Rule, and High Point Law\u2019s real-world perspective.<\/p>\n

To the first point, Justice Edmunds provides frank but caring advice to help equip students for the harsh reality that facts speak louder than feelings in the courtroom. \u201cYou will be graded on how well you defend your corner,\u201d he exhorts, \u201cnot how you feel about the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

This advice that a new attorney would rather not learn the hard way pairs well with High Point Law\u2019s real-world perspective. It\u2019s a school where experiential learning is just as important as academic theory.<\/p>\n

Innovations such as Professional Identify Formation courses and having 80 distinguished faculty and lawyers on the extended faculty, according to Justice Edmunds, \u201cshow students that a law degree opens many career doors beyond those students traditionally consider, such as joining a firm or opening their own office.\u201d<\/p>\n

In all these things, Justice Edmund\u2019s emphasizes to first-year students the importance of the Golden Rule. \u201cTo thrive as a lawyer, the students need to treat everyone in the legal system with consideration and respect,\u201d Justice Edmunds shared.<\/p>\n

He then continued, \u201cOpposing attorneys are not evil. Clerks can save you from your own mistakes. Courthouse janitors are working men and women. Everyone watches the lawyers and knows who the jerks are. And who the good ones are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justice Edmunds practices what he preaches. He is a recent recipient of the John B. McMillan Distinguished Service Award, which \u201chonors current and retired members of the North Carolina State Bar throughout the state who have demonstrated exemplary service to the legal profession.\u201d<\/p>\n

High Point Law is excited to see such a great jurist, professor, and man\u2014our very own Justice Edmunds\u2014featured in such a widely circulated magazine. According to the article\u2019s author, the story was \u201ce-blasted to the 6,000 subscribers and 200 in-house attorneys.\u201d That\u2019s in addition to the hundreds of hard copies that are mailed out to firms across the state.<\/p>\n
