\"ncOn Monday, June 1, 2026, Mark Martin, founding dean of High Point University\u2019s School of Law and former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, arranged a special morning gathering at the Supreme Court building in Raleigh for a group of High Point Law students who are currently interning at the North Carolina Supreme Court and the North Carolina Court of Appeals. While enjoying mid-morning refreshments of coffee and donuts at the Supreme Court building, these future legal leaders received invaluable advice and encouragement from members of the state’s highest appellate courts.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the gathering was when NC Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby addressed the interns. He highlighted the profound, historic importance of this year\u2019s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. He reminded the interns that our semiquincentennial celebrations apply not only to the nation but also to the state of North Carolina. Chief Justice Newby encouraged the interns to build strong professional networks and lasting friendships while making the most of the rare opportunity to work closely with the state\u2019s appellate judges.<\/p>\n

In addition to the remarks by Chief Justice Newby, Judge April Wood of the NC Court of Appeals shared her inspiring personal journey to the bench. As the first college graduate and the first attorney in her family, Judge Wood spoke about the power of perseverance. Her story served as a powerful inspiration to the interns that dedication and faith can open opportunities in the legal profession.<\/p>\n

Dean Martin had this to say regarding this special event:<\/p>\n

“Judicial internships offer an unmatched foundation for legal excellence, allowing our students to actively participate in the administration of justice.
