On May 21, 2026, Professor Pete Nemerovski delivered a presentation at the Empire State Legal Writing Conference at Fordham Law School in New York City. He spoke on his recent law review article \u201cFriend or Foe? Generative AI and Legal Writing\u201d which was published in the Maine Law Review and can be found at <\/span>https:\/\/digitalcommons.mainelaw.maine.edu\/mlr\/vol78\/iss1\/4\/<\/span><\/a>. The article describes a series of simulations in which Professor Nemerovski worked with ChatGPT to help draft legal writing assignments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Presenting to an audience of legal writing professors from around the country, Professor Nemerovski encouraged them to incorporate generative AI into their courses. He informed the conference that although generative AI programs cannot write excellent motions, briefs, and legal memoranda at this point, they should not ignore the technology altogether. Instead, he urged them to have their students work with generative AI programs so that they could adapt to the strengths and limitations of AI and gain invaluable experience as it evolves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commenting on his presentation, Nemerovski said, \u201cI was excited to speak at the Legal Writing Conference. The importance of working with AI is challenging, but it cannot be ignored. It is and will continue to have a tremendous impact on the legal profession, and so it is essential that those of us in legal education find ways to incorporate AI into our courses.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pete Nemerovski serves as an associate professor of Law and as Director of Advocacy at the Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law at High Point University. He has nearly 26 years\u2019 experience teaching law and currently oversees the Legal Research and Writing curriculum for first-year students. He is a member of two prominent legal writing organizations: the Association of Legal Writing Directors and the Legal Writing Institute. During his teaching career he has become an expert in developing innovative approaches to teaching legal writing. That ability gives him the necessary skills to embrace the impact of generative AI on legal education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
