Dr. Bird\u2019s Advice for Sad Poets<\/em> by Evan Roskos<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Sixteen-year-old James Whitman loves poetry, hugging trees, and talking to Dr. Bird, his imaginary therapist. But while James tries to greet each day with a Walt Whitman-esque “yawp,” life hasn’t been the same since his parents, the Banshee and the Brute, kicked his beloved sister Jorie out of the house after she was expelled from school.<\/p>\n

James never considered life at his house to be happy (why else would he need a bird therapist?), but without Jorie, things are becoming unmanageable. Even his best friend Derek’s sick jokes and the fact that the adorable Beth is actually giving him the time of day cannot seem to allay his anxiety and depression. James sets out on a mission to find out what happened the day Jorie was expelled from school and to try to get his parents to let her come back home, but he finds out there is more to Jorie’s story than he originally knew and that sometimes the best way to help others is to first help yourself.<\/p>\n

Evan Roskos’ debut novel is a Morris Award finalist<\/a>. It’s unique and quirky, and although it touches on some heavy subjects, it maintains an element of hope and humor, and advises its readers to carry those feelings with them every day. This book will make a great summer read, especially for those who liked The Perks of Being a Wallflower<\/a> and Eleanor & Park.<\/a><\/p>\n
