\"\"The 2018 Black History Theme is \u201cAfrican Americans in Times of War.” We want to honor all of the African Americans that participated from the War of 1812 to our current war on terrorism. 2018 also marks the 100th anniversary of World War I.<\/code><\/p>\n

According to the Association of the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH):<\/code><\/p>\n

\u201cTimes of War inevitably provide the framework for many stories related to African American soldiers and sailors, veterans, and civilians. This is a theme filled with paradoxes of valor and defeat, of civil rights opportunities and setbacks, of struggles abroad and at home, of artistic creativity and repression, and of catastrophic loss of life and the righteous hope for peace.\u201d<\/code><\/p>\n

Negro History Week was created by Carter G. Woodson, an African-American historian, in February of 1926. It was to be observed during the 2nd week of February. <\/code><\/p>\n

Black History Month was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1976. Since then, each president has designated February as Black History Month. <\/code>\"\"<\/a><\/code><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/code>This year, we honor Sgt. Benjamin E. Headen, father of La-Nita Williams, head of Circulation Services at Smith Library. Sgt. Headen served his country in the US Army during the Korean War of 1950-1953.<\/h2>\n

To celebrate Black History Month, La-Nita Williams curated a display of books honoring African American soldiers throughout history. You can find the display on the main floor of Smith Library next to the reference desk.<\/p>\n

All books in the display are available for checkout.<\/p>\n
