Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/careerinternships\/\">Office of Career and Professional Development<\/a> often partners with parents to provide students the best opportunities to grow their interests. We offer students weekly workshops, career and internship expos each semester, one-on-one coaching with Career Advisors and drop-in hours where they can meet with Peer Career Advisors for a quick chat!<\/p>\n<p>The job market is a competitive place for college-aged individuals. You are also an important resource for your student as they apply for internships and full-time positions. Here are a few tips for how you can best support your student as they advance their career:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HPU\u2019s Spring Career and Internship Expo is also quickly approaching on February 16 in the Qubein Arena and Conference Center. The event runs from 10 a.m. &#8211; 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. &#8211; 4 p.m. A photographer will be on site for your student to receive a complimentary professional headshot for their LinkedIn profile. Encourage your student to attend and network with employers!<\/li>\n<li>Encourage them to attend workshops with the\u00a0Office of Career and Professional Development. Every topic related to hiring and landing a job will be addressed, from <a href=\"https:\/\/highpoint.joinhandshake.com\/events\/929561\/share_preview\">time management and organization<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/highpoint.joinhandshake.com\/events\/929563\/share_preview\">panel discussions<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/highpoint.joinhandshake.com\/events\/929564\/share_preview\">resume building<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage your student to schedule an appointment with their Career Advisor. The advising team is prepared and ready to help students with a variety of topics. Students can schedule an appointment by using their <a href=\"https:\/\/highpoint.joinhandshake.com\/login\">Handshake account<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage your student to dedicate a substantial amount of time to connecting, researching and doing the work required to secure an internship or full-time job. Those who are diligent in networking, applying and most importantly, following-up, will be the first considered when an opening occurs. This is the time to be a highly active job seeker! Simply applying online through the myriad of \u201cjob boards\u201d is not enough. As you know, most jobs are not advertised, and as many as 75% of jobs are found through networking connections.<\/li>\n<li>Students and graduates must be flexible in what they are looking for. While at HPU and through enriching life experiences, students have developed life skills that are transferable to many types of jobs. Many employers do not put a huge emphasis on a student\u2019s academic major, rather, they focus on how teachable and coachable the person is, how quickly they can be trained and learn to adapt. Students will need to be creative as they think of ways to apply their skills to a variety of industries and positions.<\/li>\n<li>Students must remember to search for opportunities where they can learn new skills so they can use those skills in their next role.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the Office of Career and Professional Development on Instagram\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hpucpd\/\">@hpucpd<\/a>and Facebook at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/highpointucpd\/\">HPU Career and Professional Development<\/a>\u00a0to keep up with offerings. The team is working tirelessly to provide excellent workshops to ensure that HPU students and graduates are ready to transition from college and into the workplace.<\/li>\n<li>You can also work with our office by connecting us to your company\u2019s HR teams when open positions become available. We\u2019d love to promote these opportunities and make connections to companies where our parents work!
