Physics majors Paddy Clancy, Kyle Corcoran, Noah Worley, Nolan Roth, and Luke Forzley, along with Jeff Regester, are in Southern New Mexico for the 2017 Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) and First Annual Spaceport America Cup. Over 110 teams from colleges and universities in 11 countries launched solid, liquid, and hybrid rockets to target altitudes up to 30,000 feet.
The volunteer team of HPU physics majors had a fun week of long hours and little sleep registering 82 teams, setting up launch pads, and helping teams set up, launch and recover their rockets. Conditions were challenging, with temperatures above 110 F, dehydration, and even a dust devil that rampaged through the base camp sending tents flying. The team learned a lot and are planning to return next year to compete.
