{"id":37,"date":"2012-10-09T15:49:22","date_gmt":"2012-10-09T15:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tuxpan.highpoint.edu\/president\/?p=37"},"modified":"2022-08-29T20:28:41","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:28:41","slug":"create-your-own-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/president\/2012\/10\/09\/create-your-own-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Create Your Own Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some people wait for the future to happen.\u00a0Others create their futures.\u00a0The former depend on the luck of the draw.\u00a0The latter cut their own deal.<\/p>\n<p>How do you create your own future?<\/p>\n<p>By forming a vision and expressing it through a mission statement.\u00a0Your dream now glitters on the horizon of the future.\u00a0But you are standing in the reality of the here and now.<\/p>\n<p>How do you close the distance?<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t dream your way into the future.\u00a0You must have a plan.\u00a0You have to know where you want to go and decide how you&#8217;re going to get there.<\/p>\n<p>The important word is &#8216;how.&#8217;\u00a0The word &#8216;if&#8217; won&#8217;t take you there.\u00a0You must approach your future with a sense of certainty that your dream is achievable.<\/p>\n<p>Hannibal, the great general from ancient Carthage, once asserted: &#8220;We will either find a way or make one.&#8221;\u00a0Be like Hannibal.<\/p>\n<p>A plan will establish a route to your destination. It will prevent you from drifting aimlessly through life.\u00a0A good plan will have these characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It will specify actions. By deciding what actions you will take to bring your vision to reality, you take control of events instead of responding to them.<\/li>\n<li>It will set a timetable.\u00a0Without a specific timetable, your plan loses cohesion and never gains momentum.\u00a0Nothing gets accomplished &#8220;sooner or later.&#8221; It gets accomplished at a specific time and specific place.<\/li>\n<li>It will be flexible. You can&#8217;t anticipate every event and circumstance that might have an impact on your future, but you can allow for contingencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You formed your vision in the creative right side of your brain.\u00a0To create a workable plan, you need to bring the logical left side of the brain into the picture.\u00a0Use your left brain to pass ultimate judgment on the ideas you&#8217;ve generated, to set priorities and to devise workable action plans.<\/p>\n<p>You begin the planning process by revisiting your vision and reviewing your mission statement.<\/p>\n<p>Assess your present circumstances and measure the gap between where you are and where you want to be.\u00a0Then follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p>(1) Set goals. (2) Set priorities. (3) Develop strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Your present circumstances establish a starting point, but they don&#8217;t determine your destination.\u00a0Where you are very quickly becomes where you&#8217;ve been.\u00a0So keep your eyes focused on the future &#8211;where you want to go&#8211;instead of on the past&#8211;where you&#8217;ve been.<\/p>\n<p>Have a good trip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some people wait for the future to happen.\u00a0Others create their futures.\u00a0The former depend on the luck of the draw.\u00a0The latter cut their own deal.
