First Year Housing Frequently Asked Questions
Housing Accommodations
a. If you are a person with a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and require accessible housing, you must contact the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS) to self-identify and request accessible housing.
b. You must submit appropriate documentation that provides a diagnosis, describes your specific functional limitations, and describes how your activities of daily living are limited by your disability and substantiate your need for accessible housing.
c. All requests for accessible housing and documentation must be submitted to The Office of Accessibility Resources and Services by April 1, 2023 to receive priority housing.
d. Housing accommodations ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to college education and university life. Students who are registered with the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS), and approved for a housing accommodation(s), will be offered a housing assignment from Student Life that addresses the functional limitations of their disability and meets the requirements of their accommodation(s). All residential properties are considered on campus. Housing preferences will not be able to be considered in the placement decision.
e. If students accept the accommodation(s), they will be assigned to that location at a standard room rate. Students who decline their accommodations offer will participate in the general housing selection process. Students who disagree with the initial accommodation determination or accommodation assignment have the opportunity to appeal through the Student Grievance procedure, which is routed to the 504 Coordinator.
f. If the request is made after housing due dates have passed, the availability of an accessible housing assignment is subject to availability and is not guaranteed.
g. Housing accommodations ensure that a student’s need for accessible housing is met. Housing accommodations do not guarantee a specific residence hall or room within a residence hall.
h. Approved accessible housing assignments are directly communicated by the Office of Student Life not through the online room reservation process.
i. Although the application for accessible housing is made through the Office of Accessibility Resources and Service, all other policies and procedures of HPU Housing apply.
You can find more information online about accessible housing at www.highpoint.edu/oars/housingaccommodations. Please contact the HPU Office of Accessibility Resources and Services at 336-841-9026 or by email at oars@highpoint.edu
Honors Scholar Housing
Honors Scholar students are required to live in Finch for their first and sophomore years. The honors college provides names of first year students who are required to live in Finch to the Housing Operations Team. Students should complete the housing application as if they are not an honors student.
Important Tips on Completing Your Housing Application
a. The housing application for incoming first year students will open on January 16, 2023 via the housing portal.
b. Students should complete the survey and answer the questionnaire as openly and honestly as possible. The questionnaire is used for roommate matching.
c. Students are able to list up to seven preferences for a preferred housing location.
d. First Year students are not allowed to select their roommate.
e. The housing contract must be signed prior to the application being complete. If the student is under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian is required to complete the proxy form. It is best to complete the housing application with a parent/guardian close by, so the application can be completed with the proxy signature.

How Housing Assignments Are Determined
a. Housing assignments for first year students are determined based on the admissions decision type and the date the enrollment deposit is paid. This information is sent over from Undergraduate admissions directly to Student Life.
b. Every attempt is made to place students in one of their top preferences based on availability.
c. Students who are wanting to live in the same community as another student have the best opportunity when their preferences match each others.
d. Housing Assignments are released via the students High Point email by the middle of June.
What If I Didn’t Receive My First Preference?
a. Although every attempt to place students in their top preferences is made, this does not always work out for each student. The Housing Operations team will automatically place students on their first preference waitlist based on admissions decision type and enrollment deposit paid date.
b. Students are welcome to add themselves to any other waitlists via the Housing Portal. Any addition to waitlists via the housing portal are on a first come, first serve basis. Student Life will work waitlists until the end of July. Students can always log back into the Housing portal to check their waitlist placement.
c. Student Life can never determine how much movement each waitlist will receive and ask that students are patient with us as we try and move students around.
Welcome Week Packets
a. Student Life assists with mailing out welcome week packets over the summer up until one week before move-in.
b. If you have changed housing assignments since your welcome week packet was mailed, you will be receiving new hangtags, a new map and new luggage tags. Please notify our staff via email at studentlife@highpoint.edu if you have not received your corrected information by the end of July.
c. If you would like a digital copy of your welcome week packet or never received your original copy please email studentlife@highpoint.edu with your Name, Student ID number and correct mailing address.
