{"id":14445,"date":"2015-07-31T21:13:25","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T21:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.highpoint.edu\/safety\/?page_id=14445"},"modified":"2015-10-08T21:11:08","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T21:11:08","slug":"lightning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/lightning\/","title":{"rendered":"Lightning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Severe thunderstorms are often accompanied by cloud-to-ground lightning, high winds, and hail. \u00a0These storms typically last an average of 20-30 minutes before dissipating, but can cause significant damages:s<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Downbursts and straight-line winds can produce 100-150 mph winds.<\/li>\n<li>Lightning is responsible for more deaths annually than tornadoes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A\u00a0<strong>SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING<\/strong> means that a severe thunderstorm is either occurring at the moment or is imminent (as indicated by Doppler radar). A thunderstorm is classified as &#8220;severe&#8221; if it\u00a0produces dime-sized hail and\/or wind gusts in excess of 58 mph, or if the storm\u00a0produces a tornado.<\/p>\n<h3>During a severe thunderstorm:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Seek sturdy indoor shelter and stay away from windows.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid contact with electrical equipment and cords.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid natural lightning rods (such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area).<\/li>\n<li>Avoid contact with anything metal.<\/li>\n<li>If you are driving, try to safely pull off the road and park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calculating Lightning Distance:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To estimate your distance from lightning, use the &#8220;Flash to Bang&#8221; method: if you observe lightning, count the number of seconds until you hear the thunder clap. Divide the number of seconds by 5 to calculate the lightning distance (in miles).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/files\/2015\/07\/Untitled.png\" alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"260\" height=\"72\" \/>High Point University uses WeatherBug to monitor forecasts and weather impacts.
