Knowing the basics of tornado safety, planning ahead, and participating in tornado safety drills lowers the chance of injury or death if a tornado were to strike our community.<\/p>\n<p>Tornadoes are nature\u2019s most violent storms. Spawned from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can devastate an entire neighborhood in seconds.\u00a0North Carolina averages 16\u00a0tornadoes each year with peak activity in May; however, there is no true \u201ctornado season\u201d in NC.\u00a0Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 PM and 9 PM but can occur at any time. Because conditions can deteriorate so rapidly, being aware of the adverse weather will greatly improve your safety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know the terms:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A<strong> TORNADO WATCH<\/strong> means conditions are right for the development of a tornado or severe weather. During a watch, members of HPU should be alert to possible changes in weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>A<strong> TORNADO WARNING<\/strong> means that a tornado or severe weather is occurring or has been sighted or indicated by National Weather Service radar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13753 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/files\/2014\/07\/nssl0064-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/files\/2014\/07\/nssl0064-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/files\/2014\/07\/nssl0064-1024x703.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/files\/2014\/07\/nssl0064-345x236.jpg 345w, https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/files\/2014\/07\/nssl0064.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>DANGER SIGNS<\/h5>\n<p>Seek immediate shelter if any of the following are encountered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dark, often greenish sky<\/li>\n<li>A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)<\/li>\n<li>Loud roar, similar to a freight train<\/li>\n<li>If a watch or warning has been issued, falling hail should be considered a real danger sign.<\/li>\n<li>Before a tornado hits, the wind may die down and the air may become very still<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>TORNADO BASICS:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Tornadoes may strike quickly, with little or no warning.<\/li>\n<li>The average tornado moves Southwest to Northeast but tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.<\/li>\n<li>The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 mph but may vary from stationary to 70 mph.<\/li>\n<li>About 1200 tornadoes occur in the US yearly, making the US the country with the most tornado activity.<\/li>\n<li>Tornadoes have been reported in every US state and during every season.<\/li>\n<li>Damage paths of tornadoes can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>What to Do During A Tornado Warning:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to a room or corridor in the innermost part of a building at the lowest level possible. Click here for a list of the severe weather shelter areas for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highpoint.edu\/safety\/files\/2023\/08\/Severe-Weather-Building-Shelter-Locations3162026.pdf\">Residence Halls and Non-Residential Buildings<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Stay clear of windows, corridors with windows, or large free-standing expanses such as auditoriums and cafeterias.<\/li>\n<li>DO NOT use\u00a0elevators during a warning.<\/li>\n<li>Close all doors, including main corridors, making sure they latch.<\/li>\n<li>Crouch near the floor or under heavy, well supported objects and cover your head.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE DURING THE WARNING:<\/h5>\n<p>If you cannot get to a safe shelter, lie down flat in\u00a0a low area such as a ditch away from trees with your hands covering the back of your head and neck.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>HOW HPU WILL COMMUNICATE WITH YOU:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>In the event of a <strong>TORNADO WATCH<\/strong>\u00a0a <em>Panther Alert <\/em>will be broadcast to everyone as\u00a0a text and email message.<\/li>\n<li>During a <strong>TORNADO WARNING<\/strong>, a <em>Panther Alert<\/em> will be broadcast, sending a mass notification to text, email, voice, campus phones, building speakers, campus message boards, University computers, in addition to setting off the siren\/PA system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you were to see a tornado approaching, you would have limited time to make important life-or-death decisions.
