During an average winter, Guilford County receives a cumulative total of 9 inches of snow. However, some storms have brought more than 9 inches over a day or two. While the amount of snowfall is not comparable to\"WinterStorm\"\u00a0Upper Midwest or Northeastern parts of the US, the impacts can still be significant. Because winter storms are more infrequent for this region, Guilford County has less equipment and resources available for snow response and removal.\u00a0Ice accumulation is the most common concern with winter storm events. The weight of ice on trees, power lines, and other exposed infrastructure is often the cause of a shutdown in normal activities and commerce, in addition to causing significant transportation issues.<\/p>\n

\n

HOW WILL HPU COMMUNICATE WITH YOU?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Class cancellations and the suspension of University services (i.e., shuttle, library) will be communicated via the Campus Concierge and the Office of Communications.\u00a0HPU will not issue a Panther ALERT\/ADVISORY for winter weather unless there is an emergency situation where immediate notification is needed.<\/p>\n

What to Do During A Winter Storm:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Stay indoors during the storm, if possible.<\/li>\n
  2. Walk carefully on snowy, icy sidewalks.<\/li>\n
  3. Keep dry, and change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat.<\/li>\n
  4. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia; if signs are seen, seek help immediately.<\/li>\n
  5. Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive, keep others informed of your travel plans.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Vehicle Emergency Kits:<\/strong>
    \nBefore a winter storm approaches, add the following supplies to your vehicle\u2019s emergency kit:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Rock salt<\/li>\n
    • Sand to improve traction<\/li>\n
    • Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment<\/li>\n
    • Warm clothing and blankets<\/li>\n
    • Sturdy ice scraper<\/li>\n
    • Food and water<\/li>\n
    • Flashlight and batteries<\/li>\n
