HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 30, 2012 – Four High Point University students, Alicia Berry, Scott Staffi, Erin Karpovich and Dylan Robinson, were nominated to attend the Millennial Civic Engagement Summit (MCE Summit) in Charlotte, N.C., held Aug. 24-26.
The MCE Summit is put on by Mobilize.org, a national, all-partisan non-profit organization that empowers and encourages Millennials to create and implement solutions to social problems. The Summit allows students, who are civically active, a chance to collaborate with peers to further develop sustainable, community-based solutions.
“As demonstrated by their level of involvement on campus, and willingness to engage in service to their peers, these students are the embodiment of HPU’s commitment to servant leadership and experiential education,” said Paul Kittle, dean of students. “We are excited for them to have this opportunity to engage with other students and develop sustainable ideas to address social issues that HPU students feel passionate about.”
The students hope to take the ideas rendered at the conference, implement them on campus and empower their fellow classmates.
“Once we return to campus, I aim to inspire my friends to get involved, joining me in clubs and sharing new strategies learned with current members in the clubs I belong to,” said Karpovich. “It is important that once one gets involved, they stay involved, creating momentum; this is exactly what the conference aims to achieve, a long-term plan to stay involved.”
