Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant Series to Feature Scholarly Presentations

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept 19, 2012 – High Point University will begin its Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant Series later this month with Kevin Smith and Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, who will present their scholarly presentations to faculty and students. Both events will be held Sept. 27 on the HPU campus. Smith will present at 3 p.m. in the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce Ballroom, and Levine will present at 7 p.m. in the Hayworth Chapel. The events are open to the public and no tickets are required.

Smith, who is the author of the Duke University’s Scholarly Communications blog on copyright law, will speak on “Managing Copyright in a Digital Age: What is a professor to do?” His presentation will examine why copyright has become so problematic in the age of YouTube, Twitter and Pinterest, and how conflicts in academia have played out.

Levine, university professor of New Testament and Jewish studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter professor of New Testament studies and professor of Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University, will give a presentation, titled “Hearing the Parables of Jesus: Literature, History, Religion,” which will focus on hearing the parables of Jesus in their first century Jewish context in order to recover their original meanings.

The grant series at HPU assists faculty to feature nationally renowned academics, artists and performers for cultural enrichment events around campus. The grants support programming in all academic disciplines and help introduce students to thought provoking ideas in art, literature, science, philosophy and business.
