HPU to host Lea DeLaria of ‘Orange is the New Black’

DeLariaHIGH POINT, N.C., April 8, 2015 – High Point University will host Lea DeLaria, actor on the Netflix original series Orange is the new Black at 7 p.m. on April 17 in the Pauline Theatre. This event is free and open to the public, no tickets are required.

Lea DeLaria is a well-known actor, having won a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2015 for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, and is known for her advocacy for LBGT rights winning the Equality Illinois Freedom Award in 2015. She has worked as an openly lesbian comedian in the entertainment industry for over twenty-two years.

“We are so excited to be hosting such an amazing speaker,” said Steven Edwards, president of HPU PRIDE. “We feel blessed that at High Point University we have the ability to bring speakers who have overcome their backgrounds to achieve lives they find meaningful. I know that Lea DeLaria will bring a wealth of wisdom, cheer, and humor to the campus. We are looking forward to a great turn out, as we feel students have an interest in a diverse education, a multifaceted education, and an education that opens them up to new perspectives.”
