With Commencement just around the corner, future High Point University graduates are already preparing to commence prestigious career paths around the world at Fortune 500 companies, international service programs, public school systems, top-tier law, medical and graduate school programs, and many other esteemed organizations thanks to their journey at HPU. Here’s a glimpse of one extraordinary senior from the Class of 2020:
Name: Tara Devens
Hometown: Highlands Ranch, Colorado
Post-graduation plans: Devens will be teaching the fourth grade at George C. Simkins Jr Elementary School in Greensboro, North Carolina.
How HPU helped you get there: “The Stout School of Education and High Point University helped me immensely. I have grown as a leader and as an individual. I was immediately prepared to interview with all the help and confidence I gained at HPU. The Office of Career and Professional Development helped me freshman year to determine what major was right for me. I also used them this year to help write my cover letter for job applications.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Leslie Cavendish and Ms. Vernell have been my most impactful mentors at HPU. Dr. Cavendish has always been there to help me academically and more. Whenever I needed anything she was always there. Ms. Vernell is so loving and welcoming. I know I can always get a hug from her as well as love and support. Going into Slane and seeing her always made my day better.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “Honestly, I cannot pick just one. Hanging with my friends in our dorm rooms, doing work in Cottrell’s Starbucks and greeting people as they walked by, celebrating Earth Day every year, and so many more memories–there are too many amazing moments to count.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Follow your passion and never give up. You can succeed in anything you put your mind to.”
