HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 10, 2009 – Marcus Penick, a senior human relations major at High Point University, is spending his semester making people feel a little better thanks to an internship in the Emergency Department at High Point Regional Hospital.
He says he gets to do a variety of helpful tasks, such as refilling the saline warmers, but his main goal is to make sure each patient and his or her family members have the best, most positive experience possible.
“I make sure they are comfortable and that they have everything they need,” Penick says.
Penick also works with the EMS between the waiting room and emergency rooms.
“If a family comes into the lobby and says they have a family member who was brought in by EMS, I go back and find where the patient is located,” Penick explains. “Then I talk with the family and update them on what is happening.”
“I feel the face-to-face contact with families and patients will help me tremendously,” Penick says. “Not only will it help me to have better personal skills when it comes to potential clients in the workforce, but it will also help me to read people better. Even more than personal skills, it will help me to be more efficient.”
