HPU Theatre Hosts Production Of "Steel Magnolias"

HIGH POINT, N.C., April 7, 2009 – The High Point University community and the public enjoyed a presentation of “Steel Magnolias” April 2-5 in the Pauline Theatre of the Hayworth Fine Arts Center on the HPU campus.
“Steel Magnolias,” a well-known production by Robert Harling, is set in a small-town Louisiana beauty parlor owned by a woman named Truvy, and follows the lives of several women who often meet there. The story pays particular attention to M’Lynn and her daughter Shelby. The story, both a comedy and a tearjerker, explores the lives of ordinary women going through everyday life situations. The characters are realistic and witty, and as the show progresses, their camaraderie and the community of the beauty salon become increasingly apparent. The strength of the eccentric characters ties them together through the best and worst of times.
The campus production was directed by HPU Instructor of Theatre Doug Brown and featured students Jacki Marano (sophomore), Ali Earley (junior), Nikki Lawson (junior), Marie Ventrone (sophomore), Camara McLaughlin (junior) and Cate Lightburn (freshman).
