HIGH POINT, N.C., July 30, 2009 – Dr. Christine Cugliari, assistant professor of nonprofit management at High Point University, recently served as the keynote speaker at a regional philanthropy conference, held July 28 in Zanesville, Ohio.
The conference, offered in part by Ohio State University Extension, South Center, focused on “Growing Philanthropy in Appalachian Ohio.”
The event was held for professionals working in nonprofit development and fundraising, organization board members, and financial and legal advisers.
Cugliari’s address, titled “Philanthropy Capital for Community Development,” differentiated between philanthropic and charitable giving, and introduced the concept of philanthropy as fuel for the nonprofit sector.
“Philanthropic giving is a form of investment in the community,” Cugliari said. “The ultimate goal of philanthropy is to make charity unnecessary.”
