HPU Freshman Joyce Gomez Receives United Way's Bob Brown Scholarship

HIGH POINT, N.C., July 16 – Joyce Gomez, an incoming freshman at High Point University, was selected as this year’s recipient of the United Way’s Bob Brown Scholarship.

The scholarship, named in honor of Bob Brown – a distinguished trustee of HPU and a dedicated supporter of the United Way and HPU, was awarded to Gomez during a special event on July 15 at the Ward Street Boys and Girls Club.

The ceremony included Bobby Smith, president of the United Way of Greater High Point; Clarissa Flowers, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater High Point; Bob Brown; and Don Scarborough, vice president for community relations at HPU.

Gomez, a recent graduate of High Point Central High School, has attended the Boys and Girls Club programs – one of the 29 United Way partner agencies – since she was 7 years old. She is a first-generation college student. She plans to study biology at HPU in hopes of someday becoming a pediatrician.
