HPU Freshman Joyce Gomez To Receive United Way's Bob Brown Scholarship

HIGH POINT, N.C., July 2, 2009 – Joyce Gomez, an incoming freshman at High Point University, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the United Way’s Bob Brown Scholarship.

The scholarship will be presented during a special event at 4 p.m. on July 15 at the Ward Street Boys and Girls Club, located at 1619 Ward Ave. in High Point.

The special ceremony will feature Bobby Smith, president of the United Way of Greater High Point; Clarissa Flowers, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater High Point; Bob Brown; and Don Scarborough, vice president for community relations at HPU.

Gomez, a recent graduate of High Point Central High School, has attended the Boys and Girls Clubs programs – one of the 29 United Way partner agencies – since she was 7 years old. She plans to study biology at HPU in hopes of someday becoming a pediatrician.

The scholarship is named in honor of Bob Brown, a distinguished trustee of HPU and a dedicated supporter of the United Way and High Point University. Recipients are dedicated members of the community and are involved with a United Way agency. The scholarship is renewable for four consecutive years for a total of $20,000.

“We are proud to support outstanding students and exceptional people like Joyce Gomez who have grown up in our community,” says Scarborough.
