NEWTON, IA, Aug. 1, 2009 – Austin Dillon ran strong at the inaugural U.S. Cellular 250 Nationwide Series race in the No. 2 HPU Chevrolet this afternoon, but ended his run with just 39 laps remaining after a blown tire forced him into the turn two barrier.
“It was a disappointing day for the No. 2 team,” Dillon said. “Our team did a great job all weekend. It’s one of those racing deals, but I have to thank everyone at High Point University for their support. I wish we could have had a better run carrying their colors. I’m looking forward to attending classes there in a few weeks.”
Dillon, unique among NASCAR drivers, was driving a car sponsored by the university he will enter as a freshman later this month. He drove the High Point University Chevrolet Impala SS after qualifying 16th earlier today with a 133.735 mph lap. His car was from the Richard Childress Racing Nationwide Series stable.
Dillon was NASCAR’s 2008 Camping World Series East rookie of the year. In three previous races at Iowa Speedway, he has earned one pole, one top-five and two top-10 finishes. Today’s race marks his fifth start and third in the 2009 season in the Nationwide Series. The track, 30 miles east of Des Moines, is a 7/8 mile oval designed by Rusty Wallace. Approximately 55,000 fans are here for today’s race.
