HPU Alumnus Receives 'Distinguished Young Conservative Of The Year Award'

HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 13, 2009 – Jonathan Miller, a 2006 graduate of High Point University, was recently honored with the “Distinguished Young Conservative of the Year Award” from The Phillips Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization. He received the honor on Aug. 5 at a special reception at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Miller, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science with a minor in economics, serves as the Republican delegate in the West Virginia House of Delegates for the 53rd Delegate District.

The award Miller received, given yearly by The Phillips Foundation, recognizes young conservative “rising stars” who serve as inspirations to current college students.

“I’m extremely honored and humbled to receive this award from The Phillips Foundation,” Miller says. “Four years ago, I was also very honored and humbled to receive the Ronald Reagan Future Leaders Scholarship from this same organization. The Phillips Foundation is a well-respected, top-of-the-line nonprofit with a stellar reputation.”

Miller adds that his education at HPU was definitely a defining experience.

“From my academics to my firsthand involvement in politics, the knowledge and experience I acquired during my undergraduate study has given me an edge in today’s very competitive political environment,” Miller says.

Miller says he also finds himself in good company. Past winners of the same award include former Sen. John Sununu (N.H.), Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), Rep. Adam Putnam (Fla.), Maryland State Sen. Alex X. Mooney, and journalist-author Colleen Carroll Campbell.

“Not only is the award itself a tremendous honor, I’m also privileged to be in the company of some of today’s most respected conservative leaders,” Miller says.
