HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 7, 2009 ? John Gillespie, a rising junior majoring in political science at High Point University, has had a busy summer learning the ins and outs of the Tennessee political scene by interning for the office of U.S. Sen. Bob Corker.
“I have been to several swearing-in ceremonies for new U.S. citizens, and have been to an event that the secretary of Housing and Urban Development attended,” Gillespie says. “Also, the casework on which I have been working includes immigration, Veterans Affairs and Social Security.”
Gillespie says the experience will provide a big stepping-stone for a future career in politics.
“This has helped me better understand the local interaction between the local and Federal government,” he adds. “After I graduate, I hope to move to Washington and work for Sen. Corker.”
