HPU Promotes Carroll To Provost And Vice President For Academic Affairs

HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 26, 2009 ? High Point University has promoted Dr. Dennis Carroll to provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
 
In his new position, Carroll is responsible for serving as the chief academic officer of the university and will oversee all academic programs and services.
 
“I am honored to receive this title,” Carroll says. “The title indicates President Qubein’s commitment to the continued development and improvement of High Point University’s academic programs. As provost, I will continue to oversee all our current programs, leading them to new levels of excellence, and look to develop and create new programs as well.”
 
Carroll earned his bachelor’s degree from HPU and his master’s degree from Wake Forest University. He earned a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction (English Education) from UNC Greensboro. He completed a minor for his doctoral work in Rhetoric at UNC Chapel Hill, where he also taught English as a graduate student and had a grant to train teachers? assistants in English.
 
Carroll came to HPU in 1988 to serve as the chair of the Education Department and director of Teacher Education. He led the efforts for HPU to receive NCATE accreditation in 1992. Carroll was named dean of the School of Education in 1998, and then was named vice president and dean for Academic Affairs in 2005. He will continue to teach an English literature course each semester.

Carroll is a member of the College Board Southern Region Academic Council; a national consultant for AP English Language and Literature programs; a member of the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival; and a member of the Board of the High Point Salvation Army. He is a lay member of the Board of Ordained Ministry in the High Point District of the United Methodist Church.
