HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 16, 2009 ? Dr. Gerald Voorhees, assistant professor of communication at High Point University, recently participated in a roundtable discussion on teaching and researching media literacy at the NCA (National Communication Association) Conference in Chicago. The conference, which aims to enhance research, teaching and understanding on topics of intellectual and social significance in human communication, was held Nov. 12 through 15.
In the discussion, Voorhees spoke about how to teach students to understand the messages communicated by video, computer and arcade games. He discussed the inadequacy of most traditional approaches to teaching media literacy of digital games developed by television researchers and why they should be supplemented with principles and practices developed by games researchers.
“The NCA convention is helpful to stay connected with current research in the field of communication and colleagues from across the country,” Voorhees says. “It is a great way to participate in a community of scholars who are all concerned with improving our ability, as individuals and as a public, to produce, interpret and meaningfully employ communication.”
