HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 24, 2009 ? Dr. Deborah Linville, associate professor of education at High Point University, recently gave a presentation, titled “Literate Lives of Children: Topics and Trends in Elementary Education,” at the 2009 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention in Philadelphia, Pa. The convention, which aims to improve the teaching and learning of English at all levels of education, was held Nov. 19-22.
In her presentation, Linville discussed the effectiveness mainstream classrooms have on enhancing linguistically and culturally diverse learners? literacy development. She proposed how a more complete understanding of the social dimension of literacy learning could better ensure that mainstream classroom teachers create peer-only collaborative contexts that facilitate literacy learning and identity development of students whose native language is not English.
“I was thrilled to be able to play an active role in the NCTE convention this year,” Linville says. “I was able to share key findings from my recent research on English language learners? developing literate identities.”
