HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 19, 2009 – Dr. Jim Casey, assistant professor of English at High Point University, recently presented a paper titled “Shaken Manhood: The Senex Iratus in ‘King Lear’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing'” to the Triad Early Modern Reading Group.
Casey’s paper discusses the depiction of the “senex iratus” (the angry old man) in two of Shakespeare’s plays, suggesting that the familiar character-type reveals an early modern anxiety about the emasculating effects of old age. The Triad Early Modern Reading Group includes professors and graduate students from HPU, UNC, UNCG, UNCC, Wingate and Guilford College.
“The Early Modern Group is a great place to exchange ideas,” Casey says. “Not only does it offer an opportunity for academics to interact with scholars from other schools, it also provides a venue for interdisciplinary dialogue. Literary scholars, art historians, period specialists and other interested folks are all welcome. We?re strengthening the bonds between our universities while learning from one another.”
