HIGH POINT, N.C., March 3, 2011 – Members of the College Republican Club at High Point University recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to hear a renowned group of speakers at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). The group went with other members of the North Carolina Federation of College Republicans.
While there, students were able to hear speeches from Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Perry, among others. The CPAC is held yearly; past speakers have included Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, John McCain, Sarah Palin and more.
The conference was held Feb. 10-12, and John Gillespie, chairman of the College Republican Club, says there was a great deal of college students in attendance. HPU students even had the chance to dine with more than 100 College Republicans from North Carolina.
“This was our second year attending the conference,” Gillespie says. “It was very inspiring to hear speeches from so many admirable figures and meet people to make some great connections. We had a valuable experience and plan to attend next year with even more students. ? I also think that the conference gave us a better understanding of who will lead the Republican Primary in 2012.”
HPU students who attended the conference this year include Gillespie, Dan Butler, Kyle Laspe, Hillary Gross and Sasha Taylor Slacum.
Gillespie adds that he, along with Hillary Gross, are both political science majors and are excited to further their political experiences in Washington, D.C. in the future. Gillespie has received an offer to work on Capitol Hill for the U.S. House; Gross plans to attend graduate school at American University, where she will study public policy.
Meetings for the College Republicans are held every other Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Hayworth Hall, Room 202. The group plans to host a guest speaker in April.
