HIGH POINT, N.C., March 11, 2011 ? High Point University has been honored by the American Red Cross in Winston-Salem, where the area?s blood services branch is located, as one of the Area Premier Sponsors for 2010. The university will be recognized at an awards luncheon on March 21 in Winston-Salem at the Graylyn International Conference Center.
?We truly are humbled to receive this recognition,? says Dr. Kelly Norton, director of Experiential Learning at HPU. ?The HPU Family knows our participation in American Red Cross blood drives impacts so many lives. We seek out opportunities to serve causes much larger than themselves. It is truly an honor to work alongside Red Cross staff for the betterment of those in need.?
The university engages in five blood drives each year where more than 330 units of blood are donated. That translates into more than 1,000 lives saved by the efforts. Faculty, staff, students and student organizations, including the Volunteer Center, as well as fraternities and sororities and more, participate in drives throughout the year. The need for blood donations is always great, and each unit donated saves three lives.
