HPU's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team Attends Seminar

HIGH POINT, N.C., March 7, 2011 ? Members of the High Point University Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team recently attended a seminar at High Point at Living Defense Martial Arts on Feb. 20, hosted by Danny Dring, a third degree black belt.

During the seminar, students learned basic and new techniques, focused on the butterfly guard and were reviewed for rank. Team co-captains Chelsea Smith and Janice Daniels received the ranks of blue belt and green belt, respectively. In addition, head coach Steve Snyder and assistant coach Dr. Tony Kemerly received the ranks of black belt and first degree brown belt.

?As faculty adviser and coach, I am very proud of the accomplishments of Chelsea and Janice,? says Kemerly, who also serves as chair of the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at HPU. ?Attaining the ranks of blue and green belt is a significant accomplishment in the art and shows a great deal of hard work, patience, and dedication.?

Kemerly says that the team has been successful in local, regional and national level competitions and will be competing more in the future. The HPU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team practices twice a week at Living Defense Martial Arts in High Point, as well as on campus on Saturday afternoons.
