HIGH POINT, N.C., July 28, 2011 – High Point University recently co-sponsored the Second Annual Sports Medicine Seminar, titled “Prevention of and Rehabilitation for Sports Injuries and Illnesses.” The event, held on July 26 on campus, was aimed at Triad area elementary, middle and high school coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers and school nurses. The free event was sponsored by HPU and the Cornerstone Healthcare Foundation.
The one-day event, attended by nearly 50 professionals from the Triad, information and discussion sessions with Dr. Daniel Erb, dean of the School of Health Sciences at HPU; Dr. Danielle Mahaffey, Cornerstone physician and medical director of HPU Student Health Services, and Dr. Eric Hegedus, founding chair and professor of the Department of Physical Therapy at HPU, as well as several Cornerstone officials including Dr. John Tipton, of Piedmont Centre Family and Sports Medicine, and Deborah Rosenquist, a registered dietitian with Cornerstone Clinical Pharmacy Services.
Topics covered a broad range, including exercise-induced asthma, the importance of nutrition in preventing sports injuries and illness, preventing cardiac arrest in athletes, treatment and rehabilitation of ankle and arm injuries, and more.
“The event was held as part of our philosophy of reaching out to the community and a firm belief in the health, wellness and injury prevention of our young athletes,” says Erb. “This event was a way to support our local coaches, school nurses, athletic trainers and school administrators by providing best practice guidelines to try and prevent injuries and interventions for injured athletes.”
He adds the day of seminars also provided the opportunity to develop relationships with these individuals – an important aspect to the university’s School of Health Sciences which will train future health care professionals.
“This event was truly a great way to extend an offer from our expert speakers, and the organizations they represent, to local schools and their officials that we act as a team for the betterment of the health of young people,” says Erb.
