HIGH POINT, N.C., July 26, 2011 – La’Shelle Manning, a rising senior majoring in biology at High Point University, is conducting important research as part of an internship this summer at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Beltsville, Md.
Manning has been conducting an experiment in the Agricultural Research Services Fruit and Vegetable Lab that involves measuring and exploring the antioxidant capacities and fruit quality of berry crops.
Manning says the experience is teaching her the thought process of designing and carrying out a research project from beginning to end. She says she is also becoming familiar with laboratory instruments, analytical methods and laboratory techniques.
“My lab experience at High Point University has left my research leader impressed with my familiarity of lab protocol,” says Manning. “I am also able to apply knowledge that I have learned in my courses like genetics, organic chemistry, and statistics.”
Manning hopes by the end of the summer, she will have gained knowledge of how and why berry crops rich in anthocyanins and antioxidants are beneficial to improving human health.
“Not only has my time at the USDA allowed me a gain new knowledge of the laboratory, it has also allowed me to better define my career goals,” Manning says.
