HIGH POINT, N.C., July 28, 2011 – Kayla Vaughn, a rising senior at High Point University, is spending the summer learning about the many aspects of democracy as part of an internship with Democracy North Carolina in Winston-Salem.
Democracy North Carolina is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization that focuses on making government “of, for, and by the people.” Vaughn’s responsibilities range from grassroots organization to educating the general public about current issues.
Vaughn says her coursework at HPU has been a stepping stone in the skills she is developing right now.
“Without my writing and English classes, as well as other courses where I had to deliver informative presentations, I would not be comfortable with what I am doing now,” Vaughn says. “Also, the political science classes that I have had have been a huge help because I’ve learned about the backgrounds of issues that we discuss.”
Over the summer, Vaughn will experience with grassroots organization and expand her writing and speaking capabilities. She says the experiences she’s gaining will prepare her for a full-time career in politics.
“I have enjoyed working with Democracy NC. The organization aims to better educate the people of North Carolina, and I am proud to say that I am part of it,” Vaughn says.
