HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 30, 2011 – Dr. Tony Kemerly, associate professor of exercise science at High Point University, recently released a fitness book geared toward children, titled “Acting like an Animal: Strengthening and Stretching Activities for Kid People.”
Kemerly decided to write this book to address the growing issue of childhood obesity in the United States. He felt that establishing healthy living habits during childhood is one of the easiest ways to thwart this national problem. The book includes approximately 70 child-friendly exercises that have animal names.
“I thought a book that helps to combat childhood obesity would be a useful tool in today’s health-conscious lifestyle,” Kemerly says. “It was a nice transition from my first year seminar and health behavior change classes.”
Kemerly’s first year seminar course, “Surrounded by Perfection: How Obesity is Viewed in the US,” allows students to gain understanding of the growing obesity epidemic in the United States and the effect that the media has on our perspective of what we consider “the perfect body.”
In his class, “Health Behavior Change,” Kemerly covers information related to motivation, behavior modification and interpersonal communication with exercise science majors.
