New Environmental Studies Minor Introduces Students To Local, Regional And Global Challenges

HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 2, 2011 – At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, students will not only see new growth on campus, they will also see another minor program added to the academic lineup. The new program, Environmental Studies, will incorporate courses from multiple disciplines from the arts and sciences, as well as business.

The new program will consist of a two-course core curriculum that includes Environmental Science and Issues in Environmental Science, plus three electives from Environmental Economics, Global Issues in the Built Environment, Environmental Ethics, Environment and Society, and Asian Religions and Environmental Concerns.

Dr. Stephanie Crofton, associate dean in the Phillips School of Business, served as chair of the committee that established the program. Crofton says the program is interdisciplinary and focuses on local, regional and global environmental challenges.

“Students who enroll in the Environmental Studies program will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the relationships between humans and the natural world from the scientific and humanities perspectives,” Crofton says. “The program strives to enhance the development of multiple ways of thinking, problem solving, and effective communication skills. Students will be able to apply the analytical methods and theoretical perspectives of the social sciences to the issues of environmental problems, management and policies.”

The skills learned in the minor program can lead students into fields such as environmental engineering, land-use planning, state and federal environmental agencies, food inspection, pollution control, and more, such as pursuing a graduate degree.
