HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 1, 2011 – Nicole Chrysson, a rising senior majoring in psychology at High Point University, is spending the summer working with children with autism in an internship with the ABC of NC in Winston-Salem.
Chrysson is working with a group of children with autism to learn about goals and treatment involved with autism. Her responsibilities include recording the progress of the children toward their goals, leading play groups, stimulating small group activities, and writing home to parents at the end of each day recounting the children’s progress.
“My coursework at HPU has helped me tremendously for my internship,” says Chrysson.
She says her psychological counseling, lifespan development, and cognitive psychology classes exposed her to specific methods, developmental delays, and cognitive issues that she has utilized working with children with autism this summer.
“I love this internship,” says Chrysson. “Getting to know the children has been a joy, and the hands-on experience will have lasting benefits for me.”
Chrysson says in the future, she hopes to work with children of all types, so her experiences and knowledge gained this summer will aid her in her career.
