HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 17, 2011 – Madison Templin, a senior double majoring in English literature and creative writing at High Point University, was selected to receive the High Point Literary League Scholarship for 2011 by the High Point Literary League.
Each fall, the High Point Literary League awards one female HPU student who has shown strength and excellence in writing with the scholarship.
Templin was awarded the scholarship at the league’s annual luncheon alongside her parents and grandparents. Special guest writer Michael Malone, acclaimed novelist and writer of popular daytime television shows and professor at Duke University, delivered a speech for members.
“I feel very honored, particularly because the High Point Literary League is such an incredible group of women,” says Templin. “It was really inspiring to meet the members – definitely the kind of thing I’d want to be a part of one day. They do so many wonderful things for the community, in addition to being committed to a love for literature.”
In addition to her writing at HPU, Templin traveled to London for a Shakespearean Literature class through HPU’s Maymester program. She plans to continue her education as a law student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or Wake Forest University.
“But I will always want to keep writing,” Templin says. “It is something I have always loved. My mother is an avid reader and instilled the love of literature in me. … All of my professors have been outstandingly committed to helping me develop as a writer and as a scholar in general. High Point is tremendously supportive of its students academically, and I feel very grateful that the English department elected me for this scholarship.”
The High Point Literary League, founded in 1981, aims to promote literacy and recently held a drive to collect used books for area nursing homes, elderly housing and schools. The league has grown to 450 members, and continues to have a waiting list.
