HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 23, 2011 – Several High Point University students recently had the chance to share their findings in undergraduate research by participating in the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium, held Nov. 18-19 on the campus of East Carolina University.
Students presenting included:
– Paige Coleman and Megan Perry, who presented “Activated Psyllium Fibers and Cellulose as Chelating Agents”;
– Rachel Amanda Mayes, who presented “The Future of Turkey: The Political Culture of Turkey and Support for Actual vs. Theoretical Democracy”;
– Jessica Stark, who presented “Of All the Songs to Get Stuck in My Head, Why This One?”;
– Lindsay Sugarman, who presented “Artists’ Best Friend”; and
– Bradley Taylor, who presented “Binding Studies of a Boronic Acid-Functionalized Anthracene-Based Dye (ANQW-BA1) with Proteins and Sugars.”
“The opportunity to present research or a creative project at a conference gives students stronger credentials for getting into graduate school or earning a competitive job,” says Dr. Joanne Altman, director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works. “Attending a conference such as this engages and inspires students, and gets them excited about their fields and majors.”
The first State of NC Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium was held in 2005 in Raleigh. Now in its seventh year, the event was held in the memory of Dr. George Barthalmus, who passed away in May 2011. Barthalmus was the founder of SNCURCS and the main driving force in its success.
