HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 1, 2011 – High Point University students in the Teacher of Tomorrow group recently lightened the load of first-year teachers by raising funds to help pay for their classroom supplies.
The groups raised nearly $2,000 that was donated to nine local schools and distributed to first-year teachers. Rodney Wild, principal of T. Wingate Andrews High School, awarded a certificate of appreciation to the group for their efforts.
“As president of Teachers of Tomorrow at HPU, I am incredibly proud of all the work we do within the High Point community,” says junior Rebecca Irvine. “This outreach was dear to my heart because, as a future educator, I will be in those teachers’ shoes one day. I received great joy when awarding each school with the donation, and I know that these teachers will use it to better themselves and their classroom environment.”
“While our student organization Teachers of Tomorrow (TOT) has always been generous with their service to the community, this year’s focus on assisting first year educators reflects our deep appreciation for the challenges new teachers experience,” says Dr. Mariann Tillery, dean of the School of Education. “In the spirit of generosity the funding provided by TOT will provide a few extra resources to help make each teacher’s first year in the classroom a little easier.”
