HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 24, 2012 – Dr. Peng Deng, professor of history at High Point University, recently visited Taiwan thanks to an invitation by the Grand Alliance of the Three Principles of the People. Deng joined a group of 14 scholars from the United States, Canada and Singapore during his visit, which included watching the 2012 presidential election in the Republic of China.
During Deng’s visit, the group met with officials of the central election commission of the Republic of China and those in the Legislative Yuan (the congress of the ROC). The group visited the campaign headquarters of Ma Yingjiu, presidential candidate of the Nationalist Party (Guomindang), as well as Cai Yingwen, presidential candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party, and Song Chuyu, presidential candidate of the People First Party. The group of scholars also had extensive discussions with their campaign officers.
Deng and the group observed the campaign rallies in Taipei, Tainan and Taizhong. They also paid a visit to Donghai University in Taizhong where they exchanged ideas concerning the election in Taiwan with scholars in the department of political science. On Jan. 14 – election day – Deng had the opportunity to watch the tallying of votes at a local polling station in Taipei and at the information center of the central election commission.
Deng says he is sharing all of his experiences and observations in Taiwan with his students so they will be well versed in international elections and politics.
