HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 10, 2012 – High Point University will host an inspirational service at 11 a.m. on Jan. 16 at Hayworth Chapel to celebrate the life and work of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The service is open to the public.
The service will feature the Rev. Dr. Tyrone Gordon, who currently serves as the senior pastor of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas. Gordon, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bishop College and an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Baker University, was inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers in 2011. He has also been awarded the prestigious Denman Evangelism Award, which is reserved for those who have exhibited outstanding efforts in evangelism by faithfully carrying out the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ.
Dr. Louise Toppin, soprano, and the Genesis Gospel Choir will provide the music for the service. Toppin is an international performer and has received critical acclaim for her operatic, orchestral and oratorio performances in the United States, Czech Republic, Sweden, England and Spain. She has recorded eight compact discs of American Music, and has produced CDs for Koch International and Albany Records. In addition to her performance schedule, Toppin is a professor and chair of the Voice Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and serves as the artistic director and president of the arts organization VIDEMUS.
