HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 18, 2012 – Emily Guffey, a sophomore at High Point University, recently reached her goal of adding more than 50 people to a national registry of potential bone marrow donors during a Be the Match event that she held on the HPU campus last semester.
Guffey held the event in honor of one person in particular – Dylan Price, a freshman at Page High School in Greensboro who is battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). When she heard Dylan’s story, she became interested in hosting a recruitment drive at HPU because her mother works for the National Bone Marrow Program, and her father had previously donated bone marrow before.
“My goal for the drive was 50 new registry members, and we finished with 55,” Guffey says. “This was my first recruitment drive, and although it was difficult, I found the entire experience to be extremely fulfilling and emotionally rewarding. Now Dylan, as well as others around the world, have more hope of finding a bone marrow donor match.”
